WELCOME! ¡Bienvenidos!

Oye, let’s talk! Welcome to my blog/podcast page. I am excited for you to join me on this journey as I dismantle taboo topics, open the doors for much needed and a veces hard conversations about life and mental health.

So, let me introduce myself. My name is Marisol Salgado, I am a proud Latina born into a lineage of some strong ass Chingona women. I live in the great state of Texas in hot and humid Houston. I am fully bilingual. Spanish is my first language. Quick question? Do all bilingual people have the same curse I do? My Spanish isn’t perfect and neither is my English. I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t, but I can Jajajaja and hahahahaha.

How did Oye, Let’s Talk come up.

During the day I am a bilingual counselor with a private practice (I promise this is relevant). Growing up Latina I have noticed we have so so so many topics that are taboo or off limits to talk about. Yall the list is endless! This is where the idea for “Oye, Let’s Talk” came from. Tired of having topics that are off limits or just seeing/experiencing not knowing where to start the conversation. This is my personal opinion, Latinos do not know how to communicate effectively. Why do I think that? Well I have seen it in my family, friends, conocidos, and in my work. Now that I am a counselor there are no topics that are off limits for me to talk about. I have these hard and sometimes awkward conversations with my family, friends and conocidos. I want to say that I have learned the art of communication, am I the best? Of course not, but guess what I will open the door or sometimes kick it down if needed.

Asking yourself what you can expect from the blog/podcast? It will be a mix of Spanish, English and my favorite Spanglish! I am very passionate about mental health and will provide information about mental health in Spanish and uno que otro episode in Spanish too. I will address and dive into why certain topics are taboo and why is it hard to have conversations about them. If you want to me to talk about a difficult topic email me at oyeletstalk@gmail.com or send me a DM on Instagram @OyeLetsTalk.

Last but not least information shared in this blog/podcast is not a substitute for seeking help from a licensed mental health professional and is not a substitute for psychological diagnosis. The information provided and any comments or opinions expressed are intended for general discussion and educational purposes only.

90’s Babies we are turning 30!

I am a proud Latina born into a lineage of some strong ass Chingona women.

— Marisol Salgado.

So, I turned 30 at the beginning of this year. Let me tell you it was hard. How hard you ask? How about extreme sadness boarding on depression sad. As a woman turning 30 hits differently. At least that is what I think. It started about a month before I turned 30. Saying it out loud “I’m 30” gives me an ick feeling.  It was just like a sense of impending doom. I could literally see my youth fade away. All I thought was here comes the decline of my youth (insert dramatic “cries in Spanish” meme).

Here’s the thing. No one in my family has experience turning 30 like I have. If you don’t already know I am a Latina through and through. All the generations of women before me were married and had kids at my age. My mom had 3 kids by the time she was 30, and I’m sure my grandmother had more than 3 by the age of 30 too. I am living a complete different 30’s. What do I do? I look around at my cousins and you know coming from a Mexican family I have plenty of cousins in the same age range. ALL with KIDS. Pressure to settle down, get married, be an adult? Maybe. Can I hear the tick of my biological clock? YES, and let me tell you it’s getting louder. Thirty, I still can’t wrap my head around it.

Reflecting back on these past 9 months my 30’s have been amazing. A good friend told me 30’s are just like your 20’s but with money and they weren’t wrong. This year has been full of travel, setting and reaching goals, and last but not least, setting a foundation for the rest of this amazing decade ahead of me. Head over to listen to episode one of my podcast Oye, Let’s Talk: Thirty, Latina, Sin Hijos y Sin Marido. Where I speak more about why this can be a hard conversation to have with our family.
